This is a commercial complex for accommodating boutiques, cafes and restaurants, on a site located across from the Christchurch Cathedral, which had been half-destroyed by Christchurch earthquake in 2011. The client requested that we integrate within the design concept, an image of Canterbury's braided rivers flowing close to the centre of Christchurch. The braided rivers are known for tracing different complex patters each season. Instead of applying the patterns superficially, this concept tried to integrate these organic patterns within the design of the wood structure. Nine types of glulam using only two-dimensional curving techniques, which could be produced locally were defined. Thirty-eight column units were then created by grouping the original nine glulam types in various combinations. Through a simple logic, a space is created where one feels as if surrounded by a natural landscape.

2011年2月22日に発生したカンタベリー地震によって半壊したクライストチャーチ大聖堂の向かい側の敷地に、ブティック、カフェ、レストランが入る商業施設の設計を依頼された。季節ごとに変化する複雑なパターンを構成することで有名な、クライストチャーチ近郊を流れるカンタベリー川のイメージをコンセプトに組み込んで欲しいという施主の要望を受け、表層的でなく、木造構造デザインにこの有機的パターンを応用することにチャレンジした。地元で加工可能な、二次元曲げのみのグルーラムを9種類定義し、その組み方や方向に変化をつけることによって、３８種類の異なる柱ユニットを配置している。シンプルなロジックを用いながら、まるで自然に囲まれたような空間を創出している。
