Honjuji Temple has served as a place of prayer and gathering for the local community in Suzu, Noto Peninsula. The temple was severely damaged and collapsed in the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. The new prayer hall is designed as a place where people can come together to pray and remember the temple that once stood on the site.
The building is square in plan, with a circular interior space defined by a ring of paper tube columns. Salvaged traditional Noto roof tiles from the original Honjuji Temple will be reused for the new prayer hall. These tiles, glazed black on both sides, are no longer produced and form an important material element of the distinctive Oku-Noto landscape.
The reuse gives the tiles a new life while carrying a part of the temple and the region’s architectural heritage into the new building.
